Castleton, Vermont petition to the General Assembly, Col. Bird burial and monument, and other manuscripts related to the original settlers, 1783-1860s.

The collection contains a manuscript with a petition dated February 7, 1783 addressed to the Honorable General Assembly of the State of Vermont asking for Castleton to be recognized as an official town. Also included with this is a typed transcription of the contents of the petition and a brief description note. Another manuscript dated March 10th, 1790 serves as a report of the selectmen of Castleton, Vermont with accounts due from various collectors. The signers of this report are Reuben Moulton, William Dyer, and Noah Lee. This piece has a typed description card as well. There is also a manuscript with a list of settlers in Castleton, Vermont previous to 1775 and a rough map on the reverse of the page showing the location of the houses. A small piece of paper with the title of this item has written on it, "made in 186-? for Hemenway?" A letter "To the Inhabitants of the Town of Castleton" written by Elias Hall concerns the removal of the remains of Col. Amos Bird to the public grounds and the erection of a monument in his memory. A card with a typed description of the letter adjoins. Published funeral preparations for Col. Bird dated October 11, 1842 include two hymns to be sung and an ode. One of the hymns, "Night of the Grave" was written by Lieut. Gov. Holabird of Connecticut who was the grandson of Col. Bird.
